The category generally describes a narrow working platform supported from a building or structural frame rather than from scaffold standards continuing to the ground. Supplier terminology varies, and similar names can refer to different products or arrangements.
That inconsistency is a reason to describe the job clearly. It is not a reason to treat every two-plank walkway, hanging platform, cantilever platform or suspended scaffold as the same service.
What problem does the platform solve?
The category can be considered where external work needs a platform but a conventional ground-supported scaffold arrangement is constrained or unnecessary for the defined task. The supporting structure, platform position, intended work and access route become central to the assessment.
The term alone cannot establish suitability. A photograph of a platform on another project does not confirm that the same support or attachment concept applies.
Platform versus complete scaffold
A hang-on platform provides a localised work area. A larger scaffold hire arrangement can provide access across a broader elevation and through multiple levels. Edge protection serves another job again: guarding an exposed edge rather than necessarily creating a working platform.
Ask whether the task stays in one narrow band, how workers reach the platform, what materials they need with them and whether the work extends around corners or changes height.

Useful inputs include structural drawings where available, clear photographs, the platform length and intended level, the work being performed, access to the support area and any load or material-handling requirement.
Also identify what lies below and around the proposed work area. Public access, neighbouring property, lower roofs, services and other trades can all affect the broader plan.
Access cannot be an afterthought
The route onto and off the platform needs to be understood with the platform itself. A narrow work deck that is difficult to reach or conflicts with another temporary system has not solved the entire access problem.
If the platform interfaces with scaffold, roof-edge protection or a temporary stair, bring those requirements into one scope rather than treating each as an isolated hire item.
Keep neighbouring scaffold terms separate
Hanging, suspended and cantilever scaffolds are established technical categories, and they can carry different design and licensing implications. Describe the intended arrangement clearly so the actual hang-on-platform requirement can be assessed without merging it with a neighbouring scaffold category.
