Scaffold Mate supplies temporary stairs for construction access across South Australia and Victoria. Options include portable adjustable stairs and stair towers incorporated into a scaffold arrangement.
It does not include every product with steps in its name. A domestic decking stair kit, a ladder and a construction access stair serve different jobs.
Stair tower, portable stair or ladder?
A stair tower is assembled as part of, or beside, a larger access system. It can suit repeated movement between defined landings. Portable adjustable stairs are a different product category for temporary level changes where their configuration and support are appropriate.
A ladder may still be relevant to some tasks, but it is not automatically the best route for frequent movement, bulky materials or a stream of workers. The access method needs to follow the task and risk assessment, not convenience alone.
What changes the stair arrangement
The first details to collect are the lower and upper levels, vertical rise, available footprint and landing positions. Then consider:
- how often people will use the route;
- whether they will carry tools or materials;
- the width and direction of travel;
- changing excavation, slab or scaffold levels;
- doorways, paths and other traffic nearby;
- the supporting surface and surrounding edges; and
- how the temporary stair connects to the work area at each end.
A stair is only useful if its entry, exit and landings remain clear and match the work sequence.
Scaffolding stairs
Scaffold stair access needs to be considered with the scaffold layout rather than squeezed into whatever space remains. Bay positions, platform levels, ties, guardrails and the route onto the work face can all affect the arrangement.
This is particularly relevant with Kwikstage scaffolding or another fixed project scaffold. Mention the stair requirement early when describing the scaffold hire scope.
Excavation and changing-level access
Temporary stairs are also used around excavations and changing site levels. That does not mean any portable stair suits any excavation. The supporting ground, edge conditions, changing depth, landing and surrounding work require project-specific assessment.
Product pages can show the category, but they cannot establish a safe layout for an unknown site.
Installation and ongoing use
Clarify who installs, checks, moves and removes the stair system. If the levels or access route will change, include that expected sequence in the scope. A temporary stair that no longer reaches the correct landing is not solving the original problem.
